Common questions

Is ParentNextStep free?

Yes. Families pay nothing. We're paid by the companies and partners we refer you to, and we say so wherever it applies.

Do you need my phone number or email?

No. We don't ask for your name or contact details, and your answers stay in your browser. For home care or assisted living, you can ask a free advisor from our partner Caring.com to call you; you do that on Caring.com's website.

What if care will be paid for by Medicaid?

Our advisor partner works with families paying privately or through insurance or VA benefits. For Medicaid-covered care, your local Area Agency on Aging is the best place to start, and we'll point you there.

Does my parent need a landline for a medical alert?

No. Cellular systems work without one. If they still have a working landline, a landline system is often the cheapest option.

Where do the nursing home ratings come from?

From Medicare's public data on every Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing home and home health agency, updated each month. We show Medicare's own ratings and labels and link to each one on Medicare's Care Compare. We aren't affiliated with Medicare.

Why it's free
